Dr. Nicholas Anthony Straney

Retired Doctor Nicholas Anthony Straney left this world greater than when he entered it.  He was a loving husband, patient father, compassionate doctor, and loyal friend.  He was a great man who inspired not just his family, but everyone he met. Nicholas passed on to paradise on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at the age of 75, surrounded by those he loved.

Nicholas received his Bachelor’s degree from The University of South Carolina.  He went on to specialize in podiatry and graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland Ohio.  It was during this time that he met his lifelong love and constant companion, Charlotte.

Nicholas and Charlotte Ann Brainard were married in 1972 and returned to Charleston to begin a practice and life together.  They remained here throughout their years.  Nicholas and Charlotte retired last year and began a beautiful life chapter full of spending time with family and traveling.

Music was a cornerstone of Nicholas’ life.  He played baritone saxophone in the Bishop England High School marching band. He also played tenor saxophone professionally with his father’s band.  Although he spent many years without his horn in his hand, his passion for music never waned.  Nicholas picked his horn back up several years ago and rediscovered his joy for playing.  He loved to spend his evenings filling the ears of his friends and family with music.

Nicholas touched the lives of so many people both through his profession and through his friendship.  He left an indelible mark on the lives of all around him. His compassion, smile, and infectious laugh will be deeply missed.

Nicholas is survived by his wife Charlotte; sons Christopher and Phillip; daughters-in-law Stacy and Jessica; grandsons Cameron and Graham; granddaughters Emma, Lilly, and Eva; brothers Charles and Joseph; sister Diane; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The relatives and friends of Dr. Nicholas Anthony Straney are invited to attend his Liturgy of the Word at 12:00 PM Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
