Dr. Jane Haddad, 81, of Charleston, SC passed away peacefully at home on December 19, 2022. She is survived by her three children, Theodore “Teddy” Haddad, Jr (Rene) of Liberty Township, OH, Elizabeth “Liz” Martin (Patrick, Sr) of Tappahannock, VA and Amanda Haddad of Savannah, GA. She has six adoring grandchildren, Theodore “Theo” Haddad III (Amanda), Ryan Martin (Bryant), Zachary Haddad (Micky), Patrick Martin, Jr., Carlie Haddad and Christian Bond. She just recently met her two beautiful great-granddaughters Emma Jane Haddad and Alison “Sunny” Haddad. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, William and Sophie Dueker of Carbondale, IL. She was the oldest of five siblings and is survived by four brothers, William “Bill” Dueker III (Margaret), Robert “Bob” Dueker, Thomas “Tom” Dueker and Walter “Walter Wonderful” Dueker (Nancy). Aunt Jane also gave a big part of her heart to her Dueker and Haddad nieces, nephews and their children.
Jane was born in St. Louis in 1941, and graduated from Garden City High School in 1959. She attended the University of Connecticut and married in 1961, devoting her time to raising her three children and keeping family ties with the Dueker and Haddad clans strong. She actively volunteered in the communities she lived in including Colorado, New Jersey, Virginia, Missouri and most recently Charleston. Jane earned her bachelor’s degree in 1982, a master’s degree in 1984 and a Doctorate degree in 1986 in Clinical Psychology at George Mason University. She had a robust and rewarding career in correctional mental health that spanned the next 25 years. Her innovative work in providing effective mental health services for incarcerated individuals has served as a foundational framework for the organizations that she led throughout her career. Never shying away from hard work, she was also a co-owner and operator of Hester’s Resort on Kentucky Lake from 2006 to 2011. She designed and built two of her own homes, one overlooking the Appomattox River in Virginia and the other with a beautiful view of Kentucky Lake.
Jane left an indelible mark on so many lives that it is impossible to list them. Her legacy of empathy, resilience, work ethic, generosity and authenticity are the hallmarks of Jane that her children, grandchildren, friends and family strive to emulate. Whether it was the people with whom she lived, worked or played, she took a sincere interest in their well-being and made it a mission to let them know how special they are. There are loads of friends in Charleston and afar that made her life fun, meaningful and laced with laughter. Her birthday calls to sing “Fat Kangaroo” will be missed by many. Jane loved the ocean, always collecting 7 perfect seashells on each walk on the beach. She was an avid puzzle maker, her trick to encourage her grandchildren to sit down and spend time talking with her. A lover of fine food, there are many establishments in Charleston that know her well and will miss her frequent visits, but none as much as Chef Vinson and the staff at Zero George.
In keeping with her wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held later in 2023 with her children, grandchildren and brothers on a cruise from Folly Beach, with the requirement that they each wear one of her favorite t-shirts, which she has saved just for this occasion. As always, she has a plan.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the George Mason University Foundation Dr. Jane Haddad Fund for Correctional Mental Health Services, a fund that was set up in her honor with the support of her mental health colleagues when she retired in 2013. Donations should be made to George Mason University Foundation, 4400 University Drive, MS 1A3, Fairfax, VA 22030 or Give to GMU . Please designate her fund as a note on your gift.
