Dr. Charles Edward "Eddie" Lucas, Jr. departed this life for Glory on October 17, 2024, after a courageous 37 month battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Eddie was always an overachiever: graduating first in his class in high school, third in his class in college, and first in his class in dental school. His final competition was with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and he flew to the head of class: he beat Alex Trebec and Patrick Swayze to become a less than one percent survivor. He never backed down from a challenge. We know it was genetic.
Eddie was the only child of Charles Edward Lucas, Sr. and Vondel Lacey Lucas. He grew up in Downtown Charleston, Ravenel, and West Ashley. His cousins and friends became his siblings. He went to the local schools: St. Andrew's Elementary, St. Andrew's Junior High, St. Andrew's High School, The College of Charleston, and MUSC Dental School. He never felt the need to leave Charleston.
Eddie practiced dentistry in Ravenel for thirty-one years. He loved being a dentist and helping people to have "wonderful smiles." His patients spanned three generations. He missed them when he retired. But spending days on the golf course and tennis court made up for that. He and his beloved wife, Karolea, spent much of his retirement years traveling the world. But he was always ready to return home.
He loved being in the Irish Historical Society, the Scottish Society of Charleston, Inc, the Lowcountry Miata Club, and being the leader of the Charleston Westie Club. His favorite thing was golf at Muni with his Lowcountry Senior Center golfing buddies.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Karolea; his two precious daughters, Rachel Lucas and her husband, Bart Moore of California and Elizabeth Lucas of New York state. He absolutely adored his daughters and was a completely doting dad. For him, the sun rose and set with his family of left-handed girls. His little dog, Fergus, will miss him forever. His family and friends have said that his loss has left a massive hole in their lives.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gene Saylors and his wonderful team at Charleston Oncology (including, but not limited to Lindsey Vollono, PA-C and Erin Lott, PA-C), as well as the nurses and staff at the Infusion Center at Roper Cancer Center. They give their all to their patients and Eddie was able to fight harder because of their knowledge and support.
Eddie's Celebration of Life Service will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow. After the reception, the burial will follow at White Church Cemetery in Ravenel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday Evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage donations to First (Scots) youth mission programs, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to the charity of your choice.
