Douglas McGee Wakefield, Jr was born on December 8, 1945, in Iva, SC to Douglas McGee Wakefield Sr. and Marian Eugenia Wakefield. He went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Susan Wakefield; his children, Mary Wakefield and Douglas Wakefield III; his grandchildren, Orin Mcginnigle, Lucy Barnes, Violet Wakefield, Eli Wakefield, and Dominic Wakefield, and his sister Dorothy Hensley.
Douglas was a Vietnam Veteran for the United States Navy. He trained with the underwater demolition team and served two tours. The first as a rescue diver on an aircraft carrier and the second on a Minesweeper. He then went to the Divers Training Academy, where he found his passion for Commercial diving and also met his lifelong best friend Capt. Bo Traywick. He moved to Charleston, SC where he settled and pursued his diving career, met his wife of 40 years, and raised his family. He became the Dive Project Superintendent for over 40 years at Cape Romain Contractors.
Douglas was a faithful member of Folly Beach United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, but also sang in the choir at the next service at the Folly Beach Baptist Church. He was loved and admired by so many because of his generosity, kindness, loyalty, faith, courage and work ethic. He never judged and always forgave. He would stop to help anyone who was in need. He loved his family and friends and they loved him. He wasn’t scared of anything including death because he was a man of great faith. May he rest peacefully with his Lord and Savior.
A Private Memorial Service will be offered for immediate family at the Folly Beach United Methodist Church.
