Douglas Melvin Hughes, loving husband of Mary Forsberg Hughes and loving father of Ryan Hughes, died Wednesday, September 28, 2022, after a brief illness.
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Melvin Hughes are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 12:00 PM, Friday, October 7, 2022, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Douglas was born in Charleston to Melvin and Jackie Hughes on August 11, 1960. He graduated from Ft. Johnson High School in 1978. Douglas was studying to be an apprentice electrician when he became ill and was diagnosed with polyarteritis nodosa, which left him a paraplegic. Douglas was one of the original members of AWE (Achieving Wheelchair Equality). He participated in wheelchair tennis and played in a wheelchair pool league, which won a championship and a trip to Las Vegas a few years ago. Over the years, Douglas worked at Charleston County Parks and Recreation, American Home Patient and most recently at Wal-Mart on James Island. Douglas loved his family and his Gamecocks. He never met a stranger. You could always find him charming the ladies of any age.
Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Melvin and his brother, Darrell. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, of 35 years; his son, Ryan; his mother, Jackie Hughes and a sister, Darlene, as well as many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A special thank you to Chloe Richardson, Douglas’ longtime home health nurse.
