Dorothy Francis Petit

July 23, 1926 — September 7, 2016

Dorothy Francis Beattie Petit, widow of Carl “Dick” Petit, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at home with her two daughters at her bedside. The relatives and friends of Dorothy B. Petit are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Monday, September 12, 2016, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Folly Beach. The family will receive friends Monday between 10:00AM and 10:45AM at the church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island. Friends are then welcome to join family in celebration of Dorothy’s life at her home on Oak Island. Dorothy was born in Charleston, SC on July 23, 1926, a daughter of Robert M. and Julia Dorothy McKevlin Beattie. She graduated from Bishop England High School and entered the St. Francis Xavier School of Nursing where she graduated in May of 1946. Dorothy was a member of the Cadet Student Nursing Corps during World War II. She married Carl Diedrich Petit on November 25, 1950, in Charleston during a rare snowstorm and were happily married for 59 years. Dorothy worked as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in the operating room before going into Public Health Nursing. She spent 27 years as a Public Health Nurse on general staff and primarily in the Cripple Children’s Clinic before spending 10 years at MUSC Outpatient Clinic. Our Mom was a very loving and caring person who always put others before herself. She enjoyed such things as sending greeting cards to friends and family for all types of occasions or just for fun. Mom was a woman of great faith in God and felt extremely close to the Blessed Mother. She loved nursing, especially working with crippled children. Mom was a lady of grace who enjoyed reading and crocheting but her grandchildren gave her the greatest joy. Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Edwin “Bud” Beattie. Dorothy is survived by two daughters: Karen Petit Fern and her husband, Glenn, of Columbia, Kathy Petit Davis and her husband, Heyward, of Charleston; two grandchildren: Braden and Lauren Davis; her sister, Roberta “Bobbie” Thompson and her brother, Michael Beattie. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Ronald McDonald House, 81 Gadsden Street, Charleston SC 29401.
