A daughter of Edward Miles Mixson and Ethel Ray Mixson, Dotty was born on December 7, 1924 in Hendersonville, NC where her family had relocated due to her father’s health. After his death, her mother moved back to Yonges Island, SC with her children.
Dotty was a graduate of St Paul’s High School in Hollywood and earned an RN degree from St Francis School of Nursing in Charleston in 1945. After graduation, Dotty worked at St. Francis Hospital specializing in Labor & Delivery. She left the hospital to work for Patricia A. Carter MD in her OB/GYN practice and later worked for Carium Joseph MD continuing her work in the OB/GYN field until she retired in 1987.
Dotty met the love of her life, Bernard George Maginn, when she was in training with his sister. They were married on August 27, 1949. Dotty always loved babies and we called her the “baby whisperer” because there was never a fussy baby who would not succumb to her gentle and soothing ways. She also loved all animals, gardening and books - but her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, especially the children. Dotty was a fervent believer in the Catholic faith and participated in Perpetual Adoration at Blessed Sacrament for many years. She was known to be kind and generous to anyone needing assistance.
Dotty was predeceased by her husband, Bernard George Maginn, her parents, her sister, Virginia Geraty and brother, Edward M. Mixson, Jr.
Dotty is survived by her daughters, Patty Dhooge, Deedee Cooper, Helen (Randy) Allen; her son, Michael (Anita) Maginn; her sister-in-law, Margaret M. Ferri; her granddaughters, Karen Dhooge (Kenneth Schindler) and Sara Allen; her grandsons, Chris Dhooge, Danny Cooper, Jonathan Allen, Matthew Dhooge, Ryan (Ashlynn) Cooper, Eric Allen, Kevin (Anna) Maginn and Scott Maginn. She also leaves behind 11 beloved great-grandchildren: Tyler, Jacob, Dylan, Landon, Gracie, Kane, Declan, Levi, Jackson, Jordan and Evie, along with many dear nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, 7 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston, SC 29407, St Mary’s Catholic Church on Yonges Island, 4255 SC-165, Yonges Island, SC 29449, or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
