Entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 14, 2010, Dorothy Ann McAlister Lockwood, the wife of Edward Blohme Lockwood. Dottie was born in Charleston on June 16, 1928, a daughter of James Archibald and Dorothy Cecilia McSwiney McAlister. She grew up on Wentworth Street and spent much of her time at her grandmother's farm, Martin's Point, on Wadmalaw Island and her father's family home at 17 East Battery. Dottie attended Ashley Hall, graduated from St. Genevieve of the Pines School in Ashville, NC, and attended the College of Charleston. She had many careers including an X-Ray technician at St. Francis Hospital, a bookkeeper for Joseph P. Riley Real Estate and Insurance Co. and a riding instructor at Stono River Stables. Dottie was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society, the Theresians, the Garden Club of Charleston, formerly on the board of the Ladies Benevolent Society, the Women's Council of the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Ashley Hall Alumni Association, the John Ancrum SPCA, the Historical Society, Friends of the Museum, Friends of the Library, past Vice Regent of the Rebecca Motte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the College of Charleston Alumni Association and a founding member of the James A. McAlister Funeral Home. She loved spending her summers on the Isle of Palms and was named as one of the ten most polite people in Charleston the first year Charleston received the award as the most polite cities in America. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Edward Blohme Lockwood, her daughter, Dolly L. Lipman and her husband, Ross, their children Sam and Cecilia, her sisters-in-law, Ann Lockwood Breazeale and Inga S. McAlister, a brother-in-law, John Floyd Dunbar of Spartanburg, 24 nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Dottie was preceded in death by her brother, James A. McAlister, Jr. and her sister, Mary McAlister Dunbar of Spartanburg. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Lockwood are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 18, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends this Wednesday afternoon between 4:00 and 7:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
