Donald Peter Mcewan

Donald Peter McEwan, (LCDR, USN retired) of Charleston, SC died Friday evening February 5, 2010. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, he was born in Springfield, MA on November 21, 1930, son of Peter McEwan and Anna Sullivan McEwan. He served twenty-four years in the U.S. Navy retiring in 1972. He graduated from the Citadel with a Master's Degree in 1975 and taught at Summerville Intermediate School where he retired in 1992. He enjoyed so much the many years he spent volunteering at the South Carolina aquarium. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Frances McEwan of Charleston SC, daughters Eileen (Rick) Hack of Indianapolis, IN, Rosemary (Chris) Van Metre of Mt. Pleasant, SC, sons, Donald Peter McEwan (Desty) of Winston-Salem, NC and David Joseph McEwan of Kingsland, GA (fiancée Denise W. Gaskins), grandsons Stephen Hack, Jonathan Hack, Donald McEwan, Brian Van Metre, granddaughters, Sarah (Anthony) Mastone, Beth McEwan, Ashleigh Van Metre, Regan Van Metre, Kristy McEwan and Kara (Christian) Cypher, and great-grandchildren Christian and Jillian Cypher. Also surviving is one brother Neil (Jean) McEwan of Springfield, MA, brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Rosemarie Davis of Springfield, MA, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home 1620 Savannah Highway from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Monday, February 8, 2010 with a Vigil Service at 7:30 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 5 St. Teresa Dr., at 12:00 pm Tuesday, February 9, 2010. Burial will be in Springfield, MA at St. Michael's Cemetery on Saturday, February 13, 2010. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church Building Fund, 5 St. Teresa Dr. Charleston, SC 29407.
