Donald Harvard Lindsey, Jr. 91, of Charleston, SC, husband of Patricia Cole Lindsey, entered into eternal rest on October 2, 2024.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 7, 2024, at St. Timothy's Anglican Catholic Church, 1900 Old Parsonage Road, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall, one hour prior to the service.
Don was born in Charleston at Baker Hospital on January 10, 1933, the only child of Donald H. Lindsey and Annaline Dukes Lindsey. He attended Charleston schools including Porter Military Academy and graduated from The High School of Charleston before earning a B.A. degree from Furman University. After college graduation, Don served in the US Army as a Lieutenant at Fort Knox, first as a tanker and then on the editorial staff of the Armor School. Don continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves for many years and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He later earned an M.A. in management from Central Michigan University.
During his professional career he held the position of Human Resources Director for American Tobacco Co., The Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston County and the Charleston Water System. Don also did consulting work for several state hospitals.
Active in civic affairs, Don coached youth baseball and basketball, served as President of The Optimist Club, President of the Hope Center and President of the Charles Webb Center. He served as Senior Warden at The Church of the Good Shepherd.
Don’s first love was baseball. His career began on Hampton Park playing with neighborhood friends. He went on to pitch for Porter Military, Charleston High, Furman University and played some semi-pro baseball in the Lowcountry area. He pitched two no-hitters in high school and was a starting pitcher at Furman and Ft. Knox. When his playing days were done, he refereed college basketball for 16 years in the NAIA and Division II as well as the Southern Conference and twice officiated in the Worldwide Air Force Championship Tournament. Don was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan for many years.
What friends will remember most about Don was his collections of stories, which he shared often and as a neighbor child once commented, “Mr. Lindsey has the best laugh”. Don especially liked to tell of his unique opportunity to visit inside the Gold Vault at Fort Knox. This was a rare experience for a non-Treasury Agent.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Cole Lindsey; his son, Donald H. Lindsey III of Charleston and his daughter, Nina Jean Gilford and her husband, Bill of Alpharetta, GA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, PO Box 30909, Charleston, SC 29417 or to the Star Gospel Mission, 474 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403.
