Diane Elizabeth Guptill Runey

April 3, 1944 — July 21, 2021

Diane Elizabeth Guptill Runey, 77, of Charleston, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. The relatives and friends of Diane Guptill Runey are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM Monday, July 26, 2021, at Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Rd, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral beginning at 10:30 AM at Nativity Catholic Church.

Diane was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on April 3, 1944, to Whitney Clifton Guptill and Mary Elizabeth Buckley Guptill. She graduated from Patten Academy in Patten, Maine in 1962. After graduation, she moved to Norfolk, VA and attended Old Dominion University. While in VA, she met the love of her life, LeRoy “Roy” Joseph Runey, Jr. They were married July 27, 1963, in Virginia Beach, VA.

Upon settling in Charleston, Diane made countless friends while working in the dental office of Drs. Owen Ravenel and Alice Trouche. She enjoyed socializing with family and friends on the weekends. One of her biggest joys was coaching the many championship cheerleading teams at St. Joseph’s. She loved the time spent with all “her girls.” When Diane was not coaching, you could find her in her garden or at the Elks Club with Roy. She also spent time creating pine cone crafts for her small business and sewing outfits for her children, grandchildren and many others.

Diane is survived by her two children: LeRoy Joseph “Joey” Runey III (Jennifer) of Charleston and Michelle Marie Taylor (Michael) of Hubert, NC; her seven grandchildren: Michael Charles Taylor, Jr., Kevin Edward Van Notric, Jr., Whitney Leigh Runey, Andrew Joseph Taylor, Sarah Ashley Runey, Emily Elizabeth Runey and Ryleigh Elizabeth Taylor; one great-grandchild, Emory Leigh Runey and her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Kingsley Lampson of Southampton, MA. Diane is now reunited with her husband, LeRoy Joseph Runey, Jr. and her daughter, Cheryl Whitney Runey Van Notric.
