Delene E. Montgomery, better known as CB, of Ravenel, SC entered into eternal rest on October 26, 2023, at his residence.
CB was born in Conway, SC on June 4, 1933, son of Charlie Mack and Magnolia Ward Montgomery. He and his nine siblings spent many a day helping their parents, who were farmers, in the fields planting crops to help provide for their family. His loving wife of 40 years, Emma Ann Hewitt Montgomery preceded him in death on May 18, 1997. They went on their first date on December 19, 1956, and after four dates CB knew that he had met the love of his life. They were married March 23, 1957. He missed traveling with his wife Ann very much. He often stated, once you've had the best, there could never be another love in his life. They have three loving daughters, Cheryl Hurd (Lance), Debbie Bazzle (Butch) and Wanda Rozier (George Rasque). He has five grandchildren, Eric Hurd, Mandy Murphy (Lester), Cody Bazzle, Jesse Bazzle and Harmon Bazzle III, who preceded him in death in 1990. CB is also survived by a great-grandson, William Murphy. Dee Rozier was a friend of CB’s for over 45 years and held a special place in his heart.
In 1951, CB left Conway, SC to find a better life by enlisting in the United States Navy. He served in the Korean War 1950-1953. He traveled all over the world and made many friends. He retired as a Boiler Technician; 1st class after serving his country for 20 years. He served aboard seven ships: USS Rio Grande, USS Antares, USS Observation Island, USS Charles H. Roan, USS Talbot County, USS Muliphen and the USS Mt. Whitney.
CB enjoyed planting a large garden often just to watch it grow and to share with his family and friends. He taught his daughters and grandchildren how to grow vegetables. CB also shared the love of animals and going fishing with his family. He enjoyed visiting the animal shelters in SC assisting with donating unused medical supplies. CB had a special bond with his brother, JB and they lived close to each other throughout their lives, even serving aboard the USS Observation Island ship together in the US Navy for four years. He friended Lee R. Hurd. Lee lived on CB’s property for several years until his passing in 2011, at the age of 90. CB, JB and Lee we’re quite the trio. They would run the roads weekly visiting old friends, farmer markets and having lunch together so they could sit and watch the ladies walk by. CB had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh.
His Funeral Service will be held at 12:30 PM, Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at the James A. McAlister’s Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway. Interment with military honors will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends between 11:00 AM and 12:15 PM at the funeral home.
