David Charles Vega

David C. Vega, 71, a native of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on June 16, 2009 at his home with is beloved wife of 50 years, Joyce Talley Vega at his side. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Vega are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the Charleston Elk's Lodge. Mr. Vega (a.k.a. Metrie) was born January 1, 1938 - one of 3 who were born that New Year's day in Charleston, SC, and who remained in contact throughout the years. Mr. Vega was the second generation Italian American born in the United States, son of the late John Frank and Theo Brabham Vega. He was predeceased by his brother John Frank Vega, Jr. He attended Charleston Catholic Grammar schools, Georgia Military Academy in Atlanta, GA, and Bishop England High School. While attending Bishop England High School, Mr. Vega was a proud team member of the undefeated football season of 1954-1955. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959, at which time he returned to Charleston and married his high school sweetheart - Joyce Talley Vega. He was an active member of The Charleston Rifle Club, The Charleston Elk's Lodge, the Dorchestor Boat Club, and the Islander's Shag Club. He held the highest offices in the 1st Degree Knights of Columbus in Summerville and in the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Charleston. During his service with the Knights of Columbus, as a result of the commitment and dedication to his family, they received The Family of the Year award. He also received great honor and blessings when selected to serve as a personal escort to Mother Teresa when she visited Charleston in 1982. Mr. Vega had a zest for life, never met a stranger, and was always willing to help his fellow man. He will be sadly missed and forever revered. He will be greatly and forever missed by his wife, Joyce; his daughters, Theo Vega Fouts (Denny) and Rosanne Vega Smith (Jodi), his four grandchildren, Daniel Johnson (Julia), Lauren Johnson, Joshua Wingfield, and Hampton Smith, and his three great grandchildren, Kimberly, Nathaniel and Alexander. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the N.J. Theos Scholarship Fund c/o Bishop England High School, 363 Seven Farms Dr. Charleston, SC 29492 or to the MUSC Heart Transplant, Heart Failure, 326 Calhoun St. MSC 110, Charleston, SC 29425.
