David Lawrence Therien, 60, of John's Island, South Carolina, died Friday, August 25, in a motor vehicle accident. Born in Holyoke on May 7, 1963, he was raised in South Hadley, the son of the late Lawrence and Eileen Therien. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Massachusetts for whom he later worked, writing code for the bursar office. Mr. Therien also worked with Catholic Charities in the Bay Area, as well as Zep Solar and Casper Sleep in California. He was currently employed as an analyst for the MIL Corporation in South Carolina.

Mr. Therien was the beloved husband of Courtney Emma Therien of John's Island, and father of John Agnus Therien of California. An accomplished tennis player, Mr. Therien was ranked as a teenager and still enjoyed playing the sport, particularly with his son John.

Mr. Therien continued in his father's footsteps as an accomplished semiprofessional musician, gigging regularly in several bands as a drummer and singer, including Cottonwood in Massachusetts, Lucky Dog in California and most recently the Bohicket Vinyl Miners in South Carolina. He collaborated on several recording sessions and CD releases with his close friend Thomas Coburn. Mr. Therien was a songwriter and guitarist. Mr. Therien was also an inventor, working on patents for a modified drum pedal and bass drum stand among other things. He will be dearly missed by all who worked with him.

A devout Catholic, Mr. Therien's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad Street, Charleston.
