David Andrew Kerr, 57, husband of Dawn M. Kerr of Ravenel, SC, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 2, 2024, after a lengthy battle with colorectal cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 2:00 PM Friday, August 9, 2024 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 95 Hasell Street, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will be private. The Family will receive friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Thursday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
A Charleston native, David was born on June 10, 1967, the son of Basil Joseph Kerr, Sr. and Jeanne Ray Kerr. He attended Middleton High School, graduating in 1986. He worked as a manager at Piggly Wiggly, Bi-Lo, and later at Harris Teeter supermarkets. He enjoyed playing football and coaching basketball, especially coaching younger players, including teams in the Catholic School League of Charleston. With the birth of his children, twin sons Brandon and Ryan and daughter Kristina, David and his wife, Dawn, built a loving family. His proudest moments included becoming a grandparent, watching his sons coach basketball, and watching his daughter grow into an independent woman and become his partner in crime.
David filled the room before he entered the door. Always quick to laugh, joke and play, he lived out loud. As a child, he became a huge fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins, a passion that continued throughout his life. He also hit the road each fall to catch college football games with family and friends. As an adult, he became known to many as “Dynamite Dave” and “The Amazing Velvet,” his wrestling alter egos. David toured the Lowcountry and beyond through the independent wrestling circuit, bringing outrageous antics and raucous humor to the ring. But first and foremost, he was a dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.
His wrestling career grew in the late 1990's and early 2000's when he became a regular figure on the regional wrestling scene, including with the Wrestling for Jesus ministry. In 2015, he founded Battleground Championship Wrestling with the goal of mentoring newcomers to the world of wrestling. For the past seven years, David rallied support for the fight against colorectal cancer with his slogan “Triumph on the Battlefield” and countless appearances as “The Amazing Velvet.” In 2020, he was inducted into the United Pro Wrestling Association Hall of Fame.
David is preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Kerr. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn; their three children, Brandon, Ryan (Rachel) and Kristina; his granddaughter, Allison; his brothers Basil, Brian (Tammara), and Christopher (Anna); and his sister, Suzanne Reed (Brian).
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance .
