David Allen Dunlap, 53, entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of September 6, 2018. The relatives and friends of David A. Dunlap are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 18, 2018. The family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00 PM, Monday evening, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
He was born on April 14, 1965, in Athens, Georgia, a son of Clarence Craton Dunlap and Catherine LeaMond Dunlap. David grew up in Charleston, SC. He was graduate of St. Andrews High School and attended the College of Charleston. He began working as a checker on the waterfront 34 years ago and went on to become the Vice President of the International Longshoreman’s Association Local 1771 Clerks and Checkers Union.
David was an avid outdoorsman. He spent his leisure time hunting, fishing, boating and working with his beloved dogs, Bonnie and Bailey. Bailey was a source of great pride to him, as she was a Double Grand Champion Retriever. Yet another trusty sidekick, was his African Grey Parrot, Peep. David loved spending time with his family, relishing his visits with Paul in Charlotte and being entertained by his nieces and nephew in Mt. Pleasant. First born to his mother, Kit (Catherine), she and David shared a soft heart for all and a love for animals akin to St. Francis. David enjoyed telling a story, continuing the family tradition of weaving tales (mostly true) for the entertainment of anyone willing to listen. A loyal and dedicated friend, he leaves behind many brothers and sisters, not blood related, but certainly dear.
He is survived by his mother, Catherine LeaMond Dunlap; his brothers, Paul LeaMond Dunlap and Michael Craton Dunlap (Randi); nieces and nephews, Heidi, Wyatt and Ava. He is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Craton Dunlap.
Memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
