Christine Marie Murphy

October 11, 1938 — March 15, 2023

Christine (Chrissie) Michel Murphy, 84, of Charleston, died Wednesday, March 15, 2023. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Monday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.

Born October 11, 1938, and raised in Charleston, South Carolina by her father John Patrick Michel and her mother Mary Collins Michel Kuhn, Christine graduated from Bishop England High School in 1957. She married her high school sweetheart, William Martin Murphy, Jr. in August, 1963. Chrissie worked at Carolina Shipping Company as an office manager from 1956-1965. In 1965, she started their family, and she devoted her time to raising her children. She added a lot to the community by being involved in PTA, Garden Club, and Girl Scouts, but her focus was always on her family and faith. Chrissie had the ability to love each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren individually but equally. She was happiest spending time with her family. From birthdays to school plays, she was there for it all. Her joyful positivity was an inspiration to everyone who met her.

Chrissie was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 52 years and attended adoration every Thursday morning for 35 years at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Her unwavering faith served her well through her life’s most challenging times and is an inspiration to us all.

Chrissie is survived by her four children: Colleen Marie Murphy, Kathleen Michel Martin (Walt), William Martin Murphy III (Tara), and Mary Elizabeth Murphy Flanders (Mark); her six grandchildren: Collins Wooten (Daniel), Meghan Murphy (Zachary), Walt Martin IV (Riley), William Martin Murphy IV, Catherine Flanders, and Emily Flanders; her three great-grandchildren: Sullivan Wooten, Murphy Donaldson, and Eliza Wooten; and her siblings: Mary Ann Kemp, John Michel, and Janice Smith. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, to whom she was married for 56 years, William Martin Murphy, Jr.

Memorials may be made either to Bishop England High School Endowment Fund (363 Seven Farms Drive, Daniel Island, SC 29492), or to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Arrangements by James A. McAlister, (843) 766-1365.
