Charlotte Louise Sheridan

April 30, 1924 — September 2, 2018

Charlotte Louise Gaddis Sheridan, 94, of the Isle of Palms, SC, wife of the late John Corcoran Sheridan, 3rd, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018. Born April 30, 1924, in Macomb, Illinois, she was the daughter of Frederika Stephanie Harbert Gaddis and Hugh Lawrence Gaddis.

Charlotte grew up outside Cleveland, OH where she graduated Cum Laude from Laurel School. She graduated from Wells College in 1946. In 1948, she completed her Masters of Arts in Chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, where she was a graduate assistant in the Chemistry Department. After graduation, she worked at Standard Oil of Ohio, developing a type of grease.

Charlotte married John Sheridan on July 23, 1949 in Cleveland. The two of them lived in Troy, NY while John was finishing at RPI. She moved to Pelham, NY, and Honolulu, HI while he was in the Navy. They moved to Mt. Pleasant and finally the Isle of Palms in the mid-1950s. She taught high school chemistry, physics, and biology at Ashley Hall School in Charleston, SC for 34 years, retiring in 1994. She was particularly well regarded by her students and fellow teachers.

She was a member of the American Chemical Society for over 60 years, active in the Charleston Horticultural Society, and was a Master Gardener. She was a member of the Junior League of Charleston, and a longtime member of the Church of the Holy Cross on Sullivan’s Island. She was a lay reader, member of the flower guild, the altar guild, and the Order of the Daughters of the King.

In her youth, she enjoyed tennis, figure skating, sailing, and horseback riding. Later, she enjoyed sailing with her family, painting, gardening, flower arranging, reading, and sewing. She would often be found walking on the beach with her dogs. She loved her many pets, often sharing them with her students.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Gordon Lawrence Gaddis, and her husband. Charlotte is survived by her daughters: Sandra S. Bennett (Craig), Louise C. Sheridan (Churchill Pitts), and Sally J. Sheridan (Jeff Cauthen), and by her son, John C. Sheridan, IV (Liz). She has five grandchildren: Sallie B. Robinson (John), Katherine B. Freer (Daniel), Craig M. Bennett III (Molly), John S. Bennett (Bonnie), and Ann B. Sheridan, and six great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Caroline, John, Jack, Elisabeth and Mary Read.

Her family wishes to offer heartfelt thanks to her special caregivers, Joanne, Wanda, Nancy, Debbie, and others who have cared for her. In addition, the family appreciates so much the support of the nurses of Roper-St. Francis Hospice, especially Lori and Stacey.
