Charles McCants Robinson, 71, passed away Monday, December 28, 2020.
Charles was born in Charleston on September 14, 1949, the son of John William and Mary Murphy Robinson. He was a member of the Catholic faith, graduating from Bishop England High School in 1967 and from Trident Technical College in 1969. Charles was a United States Army veteran. He retired in 2015 after 31 years from Forsberg Engineering and Surveying.
After retirement, Charles, decided to start walking, so on his daily walks he began picking up the litter along Orange Grove Road. His community service soon expanded to other streets and highways in West Ashley. The man in the bright orange Clemson shirt became a familiar site to many West Ashley residents. His efforts in trying to help keep Charleston clean earned him the 2018 Channel 4 Jefferson Award and the 2018 Westie Award. Charles also spent the end of each year collecting money for the Good Cheer Fund in honor of the "Ark Angels", a list that many remember seeing each Christmas morning in The Post and Courier. As sick as Charles was this past Christmas he still worked hard, with the help of his family and friends, to reach his goal.
Charles was a member of the Elks Lodge #242, the Charleston Rifle Club, the American Legion Post 179, and the Knights of Columbus #704 where he loved volunteering for the annual Turkey Day Run and Casino Nights. He also loved his Clemson Tigers and enjoyed attending all home football games.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Susan Hutto Robinson, his beloved daughter, Susan Nelson Robinson and Brandon Klar of Greenville; a brother, Thomas Rowand Robinson (Margaret) of Charleston; two sisters, Mary "Betty" Robinson Ray of Callahan, FL, and Deborah Robinson Nelson (Tom) of Charleston; sister-in-law, Virginia Hutto, and a multitude of nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends whom he loved to nickname! In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by his brother Sp4 John William Robinson, Jr. and two brothers-in-law, Thomas Hutto and Robert Ray.
A private graveside service will be held at Old St. Andrew's Episcopal Parish Churchyard and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 2021 Good Cheer Fund/ARK ANGELS, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403, or to a charity of one's choice.
