Charles Edward Meitzler, 87, of Charleston, died Monday, January 4, 2016,at his residence.The relatives and friends of Mr. Charles E. Meitzler are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 7, 2016, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal with follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends this Wednesday evening between 4:00 and 6:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.Charles was born Saturday, April 7, 1928, in West Palm Beach, Florida, to John Dennis and Mary Augusta Meitzler. He was the youngest of four children. His older brother John D. Meitzler, Jr. and sisters Mary Francis Meitzler Baldwin and Jane A. Meitzler all predeceased him. Charles graduated from Bishop England High School as valedictorian of his class in June 1948. He received his BA degree from the College of Charleston in Math and Chemistry. Charles joined the US Army in August of 1953, where he served active duty OSI (predecessor of the CIA) in the Philippines and Japan for three years, and was in the Army Reserves for six years. He received a business degree from Palmer Business College in June of 1960. As a member of the National Association of Accountants, he received a superior achievement award for work performed on The USS Hunley Update Program. Charles then went on to work for the US Postal Service as a distribution clerk and the Charleston Naval Shipyard Supply Center as a Computer Systems Analyst. During this time he received his Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina in Business. Charles retired from the Farm Credit Administration in 1978. After his retirement he enjoyed landscaping, outdoor cooking, studying Civil War History, Genealogy and looking after all the neighbors pets when they went out of town until he was finally given his own cat, Cowboy Buddy. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Exchange Club, The Citadel Brigadier Club and a benefactor of the Citadel Athletic Scholarship Fund. Charles served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1. He will be forever missed by his niece, Beverly Baldwin Ling and nephew, James F.
