Catherine "Betty" Elizabeth White

June 23, 1933 — April 15, 2017

Catherine Elizabeth (Betty) Regan White, 83, widow of Francis White, on April 15, 2017, entered into eternal peace, embraced by the love of her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. The relatives and friends of Betty R. White are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM, Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Dr. The Rite of Committal will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Wednesday afternoon at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM.  Betty’s loving soul and giving spirit was born June 23, 1933 in Charleston, SC the daughter of the late John Raymond Regan and Rosalie Bennett Regan, both of Charleston. Betty grew up in downtown Charleston and West of the Ashley, however, in the summers you could always find her on Folly Beach staying with her aunts and uncles. Betty attended Bishop England High School class of 1951. In 1949, Betty met the love of her life when her cousin introduced her to Frank White who had just relocated to Charleston. Betty and Frank married in 1951, together they celebrated 65 years of marriage. Betty’s love for travel was evident in the fact that there was never a train, boat or plane made, that given the chance, Betty wouldn’t jump on. She enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Europe. Her favorite travel destination was Ireland, which she considered her second home. During those few times when Betty could not find a trip to take, she made time for work at St Francis Xavier Hospital. Soon after retiring from St. Francis, Betty returned to the workforce in the medical office of a local urologist. Betty was always involved in the church and community. Betty was a volunteer Eucharistic Minister in the Pastoral Care Department at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, a member of the South Carolina Irish Historical Society (President 1991), Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Sodality, Blessed Sacrament Parish Women’s Guild, and the BPO Does #231. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Francis White, and one brother William Bennett Regan. Betty is survived by her son, Gary White, Sr. and wife, Debra; granddaughter Barbara Thompson and husband, Charlie; grandson, Gary White, Jr. and wife, Holly and five great-grand-children: Regan White, Emma White, Autumn Thompson, Conor White and Sky Thompson all of Charleston. The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Dr. David Ellison and the staff at Charleston Hematology and Oncology, Roper Hospice, and the superior care givers, Med-Tecs and nursing staff at The Palmettos of Charleston, all of whom made the final months and days of Betty’s life full of joy, laughter and peace. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tara Hall Home for Boys, P.O. Box 955, Georgetown, SC 29442-0955 or Blessed Sacrament Parish Building Fund, 5 St. Teresa Dr., Charleston, SC 29407.
