CAROLYN CONDON WHAM, 86, widow of Joseph Walter Wham, Sr., entered peacefully into eternal rest at her home in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday, January 29, 2022, after an extended illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Thursday, February 3, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 888 King Street, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, James Island.
Carolyn was born May 2, 1935 in Charleston. She was the daughter of Francis Eugene Condon and Helen Puckhaber Condon. Carolyn attended Sacred Heart School, where she made lifelong friends, and Bishop England High School, where she met her husband Joseph (“Joe”), to whom she was married on June 21, 1954. She was a lifetime parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of “The Ladies of Charity,” and devoted many hours in service to the Church over the years.
A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Carolyn dedicated her life to her family. She is survived by two sons, Joseph W. Wham, Jr. (Jacquelyn), Francis C. (“Bud”) Wham (Diane); four grandsons, Ryan Wham (Jenifer), Justin Wham, Kristopher Wham, and Francis C. (“Drew”) Wham, Jr. (Briana), and one granddaughter, Kelsey Wham Quillen (Matt); four great-grandchildren; step granddaughter, Elizabeth Hook (Jamie); several step-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Jesse Reynolds; nieces Helen Dent (George), Kathy Baxley (Todd), and Carol Cannon and nephew Jesse Reynolds, Jr. (Dina); many cousins; and several close friends who were like family to her (including Sharon Gilbert, daughter of her late friend Joan Clarey).
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Joe, after 54 years of marriage; a son, Richard M. (“Ricky”) Wham; her sister, Dolores Condon Reynolds; and many dear friends, all of whom she greatly missed.
Carolyn was a one of the last surviving members of her close-knit group of school friends affectionately known as “The Tuna Fish Club.” Through the years, she adopted many furry companions, all of whom were cherished, but none more than her beloved “Larry.” As a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Carolyn rarely missed a televised game of one of her favorite teams. She loved holidays and hosted may family gatherings that will be treasured memories for all who were loved by her.
In celebration of Carolyn’s life, the family asks that donations be made to the Sacred Heart Church building fund in lieu of flowers. Donations can be mailed to Sacred Heart Church at 888 King Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29403, or made online at www.sacredheartcharleston.org under “Capital Improvements.”
