Carol A. Green

May 15, 1936 — September 20, 2023

Carol A. Green, 87, of Charleston, SC, widow of Dr. Rupert L. Green, entered into eternal rest on September 20, 2023. A service will be held in her honor at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at The Chapel at The Glen at Bishop Gadsden, 8000 Noble Oak Way, Charleston.

Carol was born May 15, 1935 in Syracuse, New York, the eldest daughter of Dwight and Leona Overcash. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University and then graduated from Syracuse University with an A.B. Degree in English. Later she obtained a M.A. in English from State University of New York, Albany.

Carol met her husband, Rupert while at Syracuse University. Following graduation, they moved onto Albany, NY and then Detroit, MI while he obtained his master's degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic and then doctorate from Wayne State University. During this time Carol worked as an English teacher. Following their move to Charleston, Carol worked for various attorneys and as a substitute teacher while Rupert joined the MUSC Faculty. Later Carol began working as an agent and registered representative for Mass Mutual Financial Group. Carol worked there for more than thirty years as a pioneer, working her way up through the glass ceiling.

Carol and Dr. Green resided in Ft. Johnson Estates. Carol moved to a lovely apartment at Bishop Gadsden in 2012. Throughout her life in Charleston Carol was committed to community and philanthropy. Carol served as an officer in the MUSC Women’s Club along with being a member of the Ladies Tennis Association, the USTA and the Association of Insurance Professionals-Life Leaders of South Carolina, the Ft. Johnson Estates Civic Club and the James Island Yacht Club. Carol loved playing tennis and was an avid golfer at The Muni. Carol often traveled to national and international tennis tournaments.

Carol loved animals of all kinds, particularly Bassett Hounds. Carol often participated in the Charleston Bassett Parade, taking delight in all things Bassett. Her last Bassett, Callie was spoiled and loved.

Carol is predeceased by her husband, her parents and her sister, Jane Leonard. She leaves behind her nieces, Allison Gomez and Kimberly Hoystradt, both of AZ; her sister-in-law, Lola Bullion of ME; her nieces, Bonnie Hertel of IN and Nadine Bullion of ME, as well as her nephew, Dan Bullion of NY.

Carol will be remembered by friends and colleagues for her no-nonsense approach to life and work and her pleasure in their company. Carol’s cousins, nieces and nephew will remember her commitment to family, her kind and generous heart of gold, her compassion and her listening ear. Carol will remain as an inspiration.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bishop Gadsden for their competent caring throughout the years and most recently the hospice team. Carol was gifted by the presence of care companions, Bernie Kennedy and Brooke Rushton. Their years of friendship, service and commitment were extraordinary. We will each be forever grateful.

Carol loved flowers and gardens, but as ever the practical woman she was, memorials directed to the Rupert L. Green Scholarship Fund at MUSC or the Carolina Bassett Hound Rescue would be most appreciated.

Arrangements by James A. McAlister, Inc. (843) 766-1365.
