Carl "Dick" Deidrich Petit, 83, of James Island, the husband of Dorothy Beattie Petit, entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 27, 2009. He was born in Charleston, the son of Francis "Frank" Wickliffe Petit and Dora Augusta Koster Petit on Monday, August 31, 1925. Mr. Petit graduated from Murray Vocational High School and was a semiprofessional baseball pitcher for Summerville. He honorably and faithfully served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a Radio Operator on a B-17 crew in Europe. Mr. Petit, known as a natural story teller worked for four years on his memoirs and a history of his time during the war. His book, A View From Above was recently published. Mr. Petit was a switchman for Southern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1973 to give his full attention to his own company, Petit's Janitorial Service, which had 110 employees and he operated for 30 years. Mr. Petit was a life member of the Elk's Lodge 242 and the Charleston Rifle Club as well as a member of the Hibernian Society, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, East Cooper Motor Club and the James Island Yacht Club. He was also a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Mr. Petit is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy B. Petit; two daughters, Karen Marie Petit-Fern and her husband Glenn, Kathleen Petit Davis and her husband Heyward; two grandchildren, Braden Paul Davis, Lauren Frances Davis; a sister Jessie Petit Doran and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, this evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home. The relatives and friends of Carl "Dick" Petit are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 12:00 PM, Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Charleston. The committal will be held in Holy Cross Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
