Cambridge Munro Trott

September 16, 2024 — September 20, 2012

Cambridge Munro Trott, Jr. , known as Budge by his family and friends, died at the age of 88 on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Budge was a true lover of life with an infectious grin and hearty laugh. He loved his family, the river, sailing, oystering, shrimping, a good joke, good bourbon and good friends. A Charlestonian by birth, he grew up on Council Street and at Oakland Plantation where, among the local boys, he developed a taste for practical jokes and mischief. Budge was wily and his uncanny wit brought him through W.W.II where he served in the Infantry. Landing at Utah Beach, he helped take Cherbourg, walked across France into Belgium, fought in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, fought on the perimeter of the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded in a German hamlet near the Elbe River. On the GI Bill, he finished Clemson and earned his Masters Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was an Emeritus Member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. Budge joined his father's firm, Charleston Constructors, Inc. , where he later served as president for many years. He was a member of The South Carolina Society, the Huguenot Society, the Agricultural Society, the Charleston Library Society, the Charleston Club, the St. Cecilia Society and the Society of Colonial Wars. Budge served as Commodore of the Carolina Yacht Club and later, Commodore of the Sea Island Yacht Club. For many years, he ran the Rockville Regatta from his lawn on the Bohicket, starting the races, to the chagrin of few sailors, with a hammer shotgun. He helped create the Town of Rockville and served as Mayor of Rockville on the "no change" ticket. Budge is survived by his wife, Joye Jenkins Trott; his children, Anne M. Trott, Cambridge M. Trott IV and his wife, Lisa; John W. Trott and his wife, Mencie; a stepson, H.L.P. "Laddie" Smith; his grandchildren, Brynn J. Trott, Madeleine C. Trott, J. West Trott, Jr., Kerrison A. Schmutz, Stephen Schmutz, H.L.P."Laddie" Smith III and Whitmarsh S. Smith II. The family will receive friends this Friday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. The Funeral Service and Burial, at Gregorie-Venning Cemetery, will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. His Guestbook may be signed at www.jamesamcalister.com. Arrangements by JAMES A. MCALISTER Funerals & Cremation 766-1365
