Buena Floyd Appleby, widow of Dr. Douglas C. Appleby, died May 18, 2017, at her home. She was born November 3, 1931, in Lake City, South Carolina, one of nine children to Vera Hamm Floyd and David Winston Floyd. Buena grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she was an All-State basketball and softball player at Seventy-First High School. She obtained her R.N. degree from the Medical College of South Carolina and Roper Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. Upon graduation, she became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and worked as a CRNA at the Children's Hospital in St. Louis. She spent most of her 30-year career as a nurse anesthetist at both St. Francis and Roper Hospitals. Buena was an accomplished golfer, who was a Founding Member of the Charleston Area Ladies Golf Association (CALGA) and served as its President. She was also an avid gardener who loved to 'get her hands in the dirt.' While working, she raised 3 children, who survive her: Douglas C. Appleby, Jr. M.D. (Gayle), Thomas C. Appleby, M.D. (Jo), and Terri A. Goodwin (Barry). She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Douglas C. Appleby, III, Paul W. Appleby, M.D., Elizabeth A. Huggins, D.M.D., Mitchell D. Appleby, Thomas C. Appleby, Jr., Matthew Walpole Appleby, Christopher John Appleby, Josephine Doris Appleby, James Douglas Appleby, Amelia C. Goodwin, and Barry P. Goodwin, Jr. As well, she had 4 great grandchildren: Aila Appleby, Maylan Appleby, Corbett Huggins, and Eden Huggins. The relatives and friends of Buena F. Appleby are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 4:00 PM Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the Graveside, Live Oak Cemetery, S. Jeffries Blvd., Walterboro, SC 29488. The family will receive friends at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. on Sunday between 12:00 and 2:00 PM. The family humbly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Buena F.
