Bruce Howard

February 11, 1960 — September 4, 2015

Bruce Howard, husband of Michelle Batchelor Howard, passed away September 4, 2015. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Howard are invited to attend his Graveside Service at 11:30 AM, Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. The family will receive friends between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Monday, September 14th, 2015 at the home. His guestbook may be signed online at charlestonfunerals.com. Bruce Eric Fox Howard was born in Charleston February 11, 1960 to Clare Kamradt and Melvin Fox. George "Budsy" Howard became his adoptive father in 1973. As a life-long resident of James Island, Bruce attended the Church of the Nativity, graduated from Bishop England High School in 1978, and received his B.S. from the College of Charleston in 1982. His career began in the mortgage department of C&S Bank and then he was an underwriter for General Accident Insurance Co. while employed at Johnson & Johnson Insurance Mgrs. Bruce also worked with Colorado Casualty Ins. Co and Liberty Mutual. In 2001, he joined Palmer & Cay Ins. Agency. As the business changed to the Insurance Services Division of Wachovia and then to Wells Fargo, Bruce remained a steadfast employee. He enjoyed his position as an Account Executive because he genuinely liked his co-workers, clients and fellow insurance professionals. He cared about them, their lives and their families. Bruce loved James Island and the surrounding low-country. He enjoyed boating, camping, golfing and catching Reds in not-so-secret fishing spots. The island's community of friends knew they'd see him, camera in hand, at every competitive event his children participated in or concert they performed. He was at swimming pools, rec center fields, ball courts and school stages capturing images of his children and friends because he loved them and was proud of their accomplishments. Bruce was past president of Bulls Bay Overlook Community Center in Awendaw, a volunteer with Trident United Way, and a member of the James Island Yacht Club. He was also that guy who could totally rebuild a car or boat (there were several) or find the deal if you were looking to buy a vehicle or part or whatever. Michelle Batchelor Howard, Bruce's wife of 26 years, adores him. She and their 3 children, Kaitlyn, Evan and Keith as well as his mother Clare are mourning because they loved him so much. Bruce also leaves behind in-laws, an aunt and uncle, cousins, a niece and a nephew that will miss him and have his memory to cherish. Friends and co-workers have also lost from their lives one of the good guys. He is also survived by Brian Joseph Howard Shinta and Deborah and Al Trivette. Donations may be made to Charleston WaterKeeper or the suicide survivors' support services of Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by James A. McAlister Inc. 766-1365.
