Our loving, lovable mother, Blake, 84, passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at her home in Charleston. The relatives and friends of Mrs. Julia Blake Prentiss Hagen are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 21, 2016, at the graveside, Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
Her family and dear friends meant the absolute world to her. Always welcoming, always interested, she will always hold a special place in our hearts. We imagine she is already organizing a game of bridge with loved ones that got to heaven before she did, and knowing her like we do, she'll delight in telling all manner of stories about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Blake was born in Charleston, SC on February 23, 1932, a daughter of the late Charles Brewster Prentiss and Julia Middleton Prentiss. She was a graduate of Memminger High School and attended the University of Florida. Blake devoted her life to helping others by giving of her time to her church, volunteering at Middleton Place, and quietly helping those in need. She was an avid reader and a lifelong bridge player. Blake loved gardening and adored her many pets. She thoroughly enjoyed square dancing and cruises to exotic locales but didn't have to travel far, for her most treasured memories with family were in the mountains of NC and at the Charleston beaches.
The lives Blake touched were many. She will be missed by all who knew her. No words can convey the love and sincere gratitude Blake’s family has for the wide network of many friends who reached out to support Blake and her family over the last few months with loving kindness. Your support helped carry the family through this very difficult time. A special thank you goes to Lynn and Claude for their selfless care of our mother in her time of greatest need.
Blake is survived by her children: Lynn McDill (Claude), Lars Hagen (Catherine) and Julie Vesel (Fred). Her brother, Charles Brewster Prentiss III, predeceased her. Later in life, priceless and dear to her heart were her grandchildren, Lindsay, Lars Jr., Philip, and Travis, and her great-grandchildren, Cameron, Lars III, Leo, Madison, Angelique, Keira, Amelia, Cade, Caitlin, and Jasmine.
