Billy Lamar Derrick

January 16, 1942 — June 25, 2018

Elbridge L. 'Billy' Derrick, Jr., 76, died Monday morning, June 25, 2018. The relatives and friends of Billy Derrick are invited to attend his Funeral Service 2:00 PM Thursday, June 28, 2018 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A reception following the burial will take place at the home of Carolyn Maier.

Born January 16, 1942 in North Wilkesboro, NC, Billy was a son of Frances Austin and Elbridge L. Derrick, Sr. He is survived by sisters, Carolyn F. Maier of Charleston, SC, Terry Beach of Barnwell, SC and a brother, Sam Derrick of Mt. Pleasant, SC, plus many other family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Billy lived at home with his family until around the age of 22, when he became a resident in a Group Home under the Disabilities Board of Charleston County, SC, where he remained until his death. He underwent a serious cardiac surgery in his 20's which was a teaching case at MUSC, and his progress was followed by them for many years. What was learned from him may have helped heart patients that came after him. It was Billy's gift to the future. Billy was a very loving and caring person who was loved by many. All of the family learned the lesson of acceptance for those who are different at a very young age from Billy, and it has carried us through life as an advantage we would not have had otherwise. He had a love for all and grace and dignity his entire life. He will be greatly missed. He was our brother!
