Bill Reed

William Earl “Bill” Reed, P.E., entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 24, 2020. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Reed are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 1:30 PM, Friday, May 29, 2020, which will be celebrated by the Rev. S. Thomas Kingsley at the Church of Nativity, 1061 Folly Rd, Charleston.  The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.  The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy, Charleston.  The Rosary will be recited at 5:30 PM.  Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com.

Bill was born June 14, 1952, in South Charleston, West Virginia to the late Eugene Woodrow Reed and Geraldine Maxine Staats Reed.  He was a graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology with a degree in Electrical Engineering.  He was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. Bill was a lifetime member of the Huntington Elks Lodge #313.

Bill worked for Local Union #317 I.B.E.W. in Huntington, WV, where he was a Journeyman Electrician and a Master Electrician.  While in Huntington, he received his license as a Registered Professional Engineer in 1983.  Bill worked as PE at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC.

Upon moving to Charleston, SC, he worked at Southern Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC).  At NAVFAC, he was awarded NAVFAC’s Engineer of the Year in 1995.  In 1998, he received commendations for his work and was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service.  Before BRAC closure of NAVFAC, Bill transferred to SPAWAR, where he continued with a distinguished career. He was active in the Charleston Society of Professional Engineers where he had been President.

Bill was very active in the Knights of Columbus Council 6250, twice being a Deputy Grand Knight.  He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly 1071.  For several years at Nativity School, he was the Soccer Head Coach.  Bill was a faithful parishioner at Church of the Nativity and was involved with the James Island Outreach Center.

He was married to the love of his life, Elizabeth Lane Booth Reed, who survives him.  Additional survivors are their children:  Brendan and Courtney Reed; Erik and Angela Reed; and Anthony Reed and his fiancée Holly Shafer; grandchildren: Katelyn, Bailey, Adalyn, and Jude Reed; sister Hazel Massie and brother-in-law Gordon Massie; sister-in-law Dee –Ann Burdette; and a niece Roxanne Burdette, nephews Joseph Vance, Mark Massie, and Matthew Massie; great-nephews Joseph Vance Jr. (Jo Jo), Josh Vance, and Sean Burdette.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brother, Michael Reed.
