William Vaughn Boulter, 93, husband of Lynette E. Boulter of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest peacefully, surrounded by his family, Saturday, December 30, 2023. The relatives and friends of Bill and Lynn Boulter are invited to attend his Funeral Service 2:00 PM Monday, January 8, 2024 from the Fort Johnson Baptist Church Family Life Center, 1473 Camp Road, James Island. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. A private burial will take place at a later date.
Bill was born in Wachapreague VA, the second of five children born to the late Joseph Reginald Boulter and Madlyn Lewis Boulter. He is also predeceased by one brother, Reginald Ashby Boulter. Bill grew up on the Eastern seashore of Virginia. He was married to Lynette Elinor Smith Boulter for 70 years, and they had three children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Bill loved his family, crabbing, oystering, clamming, fishing, boating, and worldwide travel. He raced and volunteered for the Cooper River Bridge Run for over 30 years and won his age group16 times by the age of 87. He won the Dewey Wise Award, given to the oldest runner with a time in minutes less than his age, seven years in a row. In 2013, Bill was inducted into the Bridge Run Hall of Fame. He faithfully outreached to several Charleston nursing homes through Fort Johnson Baptist Church.
After graduating from Central High School in Painter, VA in 1947, Bill joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 17 and sailed around the world twice. He then joined the Air Force where he met his true love, Lynn, while stationed at James Connally Air Force base in Waco Texas. He was promptly reassigned to Goose Bay Air Force Base Labrador after which he separated from the Air Force in 1955, attended Baylor University (Waco TX) and began his 34-year career in Federal Aviation as a Radar Technician. Bill was eventually promoted to supervisor. His career moved his family to various US airport locations before settling in Charleston SC.
Bill was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church for 51 years, a long-term member of St Andrews Family Life Center, a long-term member of the James Island Yacht Club, the Colonial Lakers Running Club, and the Charleston Running Club. He was also a 32nd degree Mason at the Scottish Rite & Omar Shrine in Charleston SC.
Surviving is his wife Lynette Elinor Smith Boulter; three children: Vonnette Boulter Hancock (Jay Sheehan), Lisa Boulter Dale (Tom), Alan Vaughn Boulter (Kate); six grandchildren: Justin Hancock, Tarah Prewitt (Michael), Trey Dale (Victoria Galinetti, Girlfriend), Jane Pirnat (Anthony), Robert Boulter (Megan), and Amanda Beckner (Kyle); four great-grandchildren: Peyton Hancock, Shawn & Collin Boulter, Andrew Beckner, and a great-grandson expected in January 2024; a sister Patricia Boulter Smith (Waco, TX) and two brothers Joseph A. Boulter and David M. Boulter (Wachapreague, VA).
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Forward from the Fire campaign at Fort Johnson Baptist Church.
