Entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 15, 2010, Bettyann Marek Scarbrough, of James Island, SC. The relatives and friends of Bettyann Scarbrough are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 3:00 PM, Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 95 Folly Rd, where she was a long time and active member. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Betty's father immigrated from Czechoslovakia to the US in 1918. Her mother was a first generation Czech-American. Betty grew up in a Czech neighborhood in Berwin, Illinois. She graduated from Illinois Masonic Hospital School of Nursing in May, 1949 and traveled to Hawaii shortly after to pursue her nursing career. She was married in Honolulu to Vernon Scarbrough and traveled to various locations as a Navy wife, finally settling in Charleston in 1967. She rejuvenated her nursing career here and worked at MUSC as a psychiatric nurse and at the Student Health Services Department at College of Charleston. She was active in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for over 40 years. She retired from nursing in the late 1980s. She is survived by her children: Martin Ray Scarbrough and his wife, Nancy; Stephanie Ann Korenek and her husband, Ken; Mark Alan Scarbrough and his wife, Sheila; her grandchildren: Kelly Ann Korenek and Jason Daniel Korenek and her brother: Donald Marek.
