On Monday August 1, 2022, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Nettles, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 83. She died in her own home, surrounded by her family, exactly as she would have wanted it.
Betty was an extraordinary elementary school teacher. For over 40 years she taught first or second grade, and even after she retired, many of her former students would thank her for her dedication and her kindness. She was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Betty and her husband had a fairy tale marriage that lasted 62 years and she raised her two children with kindness, love, and devotion. The only thing she was better at than being a mother was being a grandmother. Her two grandchildren gave her life as much joy as she gave theirs. When she had time, Betty enjoyed boating, crossword puzzles, playing Bridge with her friends, but most of all drinking coffee.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Sara A. Tumblin and her beloved aunt that helped raise her, Henrietta A. “Hinky” Charles, both of Mullins, SC.
She is survived by her husband, Wyatt; her son, Jeff; her daughter, Betsy Bowers; her grandson, Danny and his wife Magan; her granddaughter, Elllie and great-grandchildren, Jake and Paisley, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
Her Funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Friday, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
Memorial contribution may be made to Roper St. Francis Foundation at www.rsfhfoundation.org .
