Bess Sanders Smith Burrows, 88, of Charleston, beloved wife of John E. Burrows, died Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Roper Hospital. Mrs. Burrows was born in Charleston, SC, on December 1, 1922, the daughter of Bessie Sanders Smith and Eugene Yates Smith. She attended Memminger School, Ashley Hall, and the College of Charleston. She was a member of the Ivy Garden Club, the Colonial Dames, and former president of the Confederate Home of Charleston. Surviving are her husband, John E. Burrows, of the Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community; three children, Elizabeth B. Thompson, John E. Burrows, Jr., and Katharine B. May; seven grandchildren, Scott S. Thompson, John C. Thompson, John E. Burrows III, Brooks B. White, Christian V. Burrows, Christopher S. May, and Katharine E. May; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday, January 3, 2011, at Bishop Gadsden at 2 o'clock.
