Bertha “Penny” Coker Molony, 79, of Charleston, widow of the late William Irvin Molony, passed away peacefully at home, on May 23, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
The relatives and friends of Penny C. Molony are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM Saturday, May 26, 2018, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Friday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM.
Penny was born on March 30, 1939 to Warren Clement Coker and Mildred Haselden Coker of James Island, SC. She was a member of the first graduating class of James Island High School in 1957 and a member of The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
She was active, and held many leadership roles, in several of The Cathedral’s women’s organizations including weekly Bible Study, monthly book club, Theresians and penny poker group. St. Therese, for which Theresians is named, believed that one could express one’s devotion through little deeds rather than heroic acts. Penny embodied this and is described by all as loving, kind, patient, soft-spoken, selfless, a wonderful cook and a true Southern lady. Her greatest love was spending time with her nine grandchildren.
Penny loved spending time gardening, working crossword puzzles, crabbing and fishing and enjoying everything about the Lowcountry. She was extremely proud to be an eleventh generation Charlestonian – no matter where she traveled, when asked her favorite place she had ever been, she always responded, “Charleston, SC.”
Penny is predeceased by her husband of thirty-eight years, William Irvin Molony; her parents, Warren Clement and Mildred Haselden Coker; and her brother, Warren Clement Coker, Jr. She is survived by her five devoted daughters and their families: Elizabeth “Lisa” Coker Molony-Buonanno, her husband, Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Buonanno, Jr. and their son, Gianluca “Luca” Molony Buonanno; Pamela “Pam” Molony Cozart and her son, Thomas Riley Cozart; Mildred “Kathy” Molony Murray, her husband, Randolph “Randy” Taylor Murray and their children, William Randolph “Mac” Murray and Mary Alice Mildred “Millie” Murray; Allison Molony Bunch, her husband, Horace Matthew “Matt” Bunch and their children, Brandon Michael Bunch, Griffin Molony Bunch, Benjamin Irvin Bunch and Matthew Goodwin Bunch; and, Megan Molony DuPont, her husband, Jason Beau DuPont and their son, Reese Irvin DuPont; sister, Thelma “Shay” Coker Hicklin of Lexington, SC; sister-in-law, Harriett Molony Condon of Charleston; sister-in-law, Caroline “CC” Molony Fralinger and brother-in-law, Albert Fralinger of Bridgeton, NJ; numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family is thankful for her caregivers, Andrea Pinckney, Vanessa Middleton, Nancy Appelt, Mary West, Betty Sampson-Young and Gwynn Pinckney. They were loved by Penny and the entire family. Their love and support was beyond compare.
