Bernard Arthur Grant, 79, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on October 13, 2024.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00 PM, Wednesday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway.
Bernie was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 11,1945. His parents, Francis J. Grant, M.D. and Catherine Furlong Grant preceded him in death. He was raised in Hillside, New Jersey, where he graduated from Delbarton School in Morristown, NJ. Bernard pursued higher education at the College of Charleston and was a proud member of the founding class of Baptist College at Charleston, now known as Charleston Southern University, where he received a BS in Accounting. He was also a long-time member of the CSU Board of Visitors.
Bernie owned and operated Furlong Printing Company in Charleston for 25 years. During those years the Furlong Team won many local, regional and national awards for printing excellence and design quality. He served as the chairman of the Printing Industries of the Carolinas (PICA) and was a lifetime trustee of the PICA Foundation. Additionally, Bernie was an H&R Block franchisee for over 55 years, managing offices in Moncks Corner and Hilton Head. Alongside his son and daughter, they achieved recognition as a Top 100 H&R Block franchisee for four consecutive years.
Bernie was also deeply involved in Kiwanis International, serving as president of the Kiwanis Club of Charleston; he served three terms as a lieutenant governor and five years as a trustee of the Carolinas District of Kiwanis International. Bernie was selected as Kiwanian of the Year for the Kiwanis Club of Charleston in 2021. He was an honorary life member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston, where he enjoyed Friday Happy Hours at the Back Bar. Bernie was also a third and fourth degree Knight of Columbus, a life member of Elks Lodge 242, the Charleston Rifle Club and other professional and civic organizations.
He enjoyed traveling the United States and the world, having visited 49 states and many countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Bernie also had a passion for cooking and fine wines. Most of all, he cherished the view from his home on the Stono River.
Bernie is survived by his son, Francis "Frank" Grant; his daughter, Jennifer Grant, both of Charleston and two grandchildren, Samantha Floyd and Summer Burris.
