Beatrice, affectionately known as Bea, was born on September 12, 1922, in the Oak Grove Community of Georgetown County. Shortly after graduating from Andrews High School in 1939, she moved to Charleston. She worked as a telephone operator at Southern Bell and as bookkeeper at W. C. Wilbur and Garco in North Charleston. From 1942 to1944, she worked for US Representative J. Mendel Rivers in Washington DC. We all enjoyed her stories about this experience, the many interesting people that she met and the frequent train trips between Washington and Charleston.
Bea meet her husband, Robbie through her friendship with his sister, Annie. They were married on April 24, 1944. After living on Cannon Street in the early years of their marriage, they moved to Oak Forest Drive and built their home where their 4 children were raised. Their home was often a hub of activity. There was always a place at the dinner table for family and friends who often dropped by without notice! Their dream of “living on the water” came true in 1989 when they built their home on the Toogoodoo.
Bea was well known to all who love her as a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, and friend. Her kindness, generosity, smile, and love for everyone will always be remembered. She was devoted to raising her children with a strong faith in all areas of their lives. She will be missed by her children Margaret Clair Conti and Robert “Bobby” F. Clair, Jr (Dena) of Charleston, Micheal G. Clair (Carol) of Louisville, KY and Sandra Clair Hardee of Florence. She was a loving and proud grandmother to 10 grandchildren; John Conti, Anthony Conti, Tricia Conti Sandusky (Ryan), Robert Clair III (Fran), Kristen Clair Baker; Renee Risimini (John), Michael Clair (Heather), Ashley Clair, Alice Constine Bailey (Shane) and Christopher Constine. She was a loving great-grandmother to 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought great joy into her life.
Bea is survived by her sisters, Mary Lydia Moskow of Andrews and Elizabeth Ann Davis of Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Bea is preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Clair, Sr, her parents William Yancy and Ruth Mercer Morris, her brothers Lindsay C. Morris and William Y. Morris, Jr. and her sisters Miriam Morris Bunn and Ruth Morris Daniel.
Bea was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church and St. Mary’s Church on Yonges Island. She enjoyed the many friendships that she gained as a member of St. Paul’s Garden Club. Over the years she served on several committees and held all offices including 2 terms as President. Bea was instrumental in the completion of garden club projects in the St. Paul’s Community and the entire state.
In lieu of flowers, donations to be made in her memory to the charity of your choice or St. Paul’s Garden Club, PO Box 128, Hollywood, SC 29449.
The family extends their sincere appreciation to her caregivers over the last 3 years and especially Samantha Waring, Roshana Miles, Yvonne Coley and Sheila Frasier whose loving care meant so much in these recent weeks.
