Barbara Jean Mitchum Witt (“Bootsie”), of Charleston, wife of Henry F. Witt (“Buddy”), passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018. The relatives and friends of Barbara Jean "Bootsie" Witt are invited to attend her Funeral Service 11:00 AM Friday, November 16, 2018, at St. Johannes Lutheran Church, 48 Hasell Street, Charleston. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. The family will receive friends between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Thursday, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
Bootsie was born July 30, 1939, in Charleston to the late Leonard Reese and Margaret Wilkerson Mitchum. Bootsie was the eldest of five children. She was predeceased in life by her son, Henry F. Witt, Jr. (“Hank”) and her brother, Leonard Reese Mitchum, Jr. (“Bubba”). She and Buddy were married July 10, 1962 at Advent Lutheran Church in North Charleston and lived in Charleston where they raised their two children, Hank and Jennifer.
Bootsie was a graduate of Rivers High School, where she was voted “Sports Girl of the Year”. A natural athlete, she enjoyed various sports, including basketball, softball and bowling. She was a homemaker and was involved in fundraising for Charleston Schools. Bootsie was also a Past President of the Sylvan Shores Neighborhood Association where she and Buddy made many lifelong friends. Her loves were music, dancing and her late beloved Boykin Spaniel, Magnolia.
Bootsie is survived by her husband, Buddy; her daughter, Jennifer Gesiné Witt of Charleston; her brother and sisters, Ronald Mitchum (Sandra), Linda Bowers (Robert) and Susan Mitchum; sister-in-law, Mary Mitchum (Bubba) and many nieces and nephews who she loved and adored.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Henry Witt, Jr. Cheerleading Scholarship Fund at Georgia Southern University (P.O. Box 8053, Statesboro, GA 30460-8053) and to St. Johannes Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC.
