Barbara Merrill Nickles

August 31, 1940 — April 21, 2013

Barbara Merrill Nickles entered into eternal rest on April 21, 2013. She was born in Charleston on August 31, 1940, a daughter of Walter E. and Frances Von Cannon Merrill. Barbara graduated from Chicora High School. She went on to attend and graduate from Lander University and soon after married Dr. Roy Nickles. She lived in Hendersonville, NC, New Orleans, LA, Fort Walton Beach, FL and Charleston. She served as President of the Charleston County Medical Society Auxiliary, where she helped start the original Charleston Ghost walks. She was also active in the Junior Women's Club and the Charleston Garden Club. She attended Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was active for many years and worked with the pre-school where she started the first recycling efforts. She loved lowcountry food, mystery novels, ghost stories, socializing and traveling with her family. Barbara was a true Southern lady - full of grace, poise and respect for others. She was always proud to call Charleston home. She is survived by her husband, Roy, her three children - Alicia, Kristina and Jeffery, and seven grandchildren - Merrill Anne, Nolan, Scarlett, Pierce, Alyssa, Alanna and Becky. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Roy E. Nickles are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 3:00 PM, Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the cryptside, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research - https://www.michaeljfox.org.
