Obituary

Barbara "Bonnie" Lee Goodwin Bunch passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026 while in hospice care in Summerville, South Carolina. In her final hours, she was surrounded-as she had been throughout her life-by the large, lively, and devoted family she cherished above all else.

Bonnie grew up in Brewton, Alabama, the oldest of eight children. As the firstborn, she possessed a natural confidence and take-charge spirit that never left her. To her younger brothers and sisters, she seemed glamorous, and it is fitting that the story of how she met the love of her life sounds like something from a movie.

On a hot summer day, Bonnie was driving a small convertible full of younger siblings to the local Tastee Freeze for ice cream. Bob Bunch, then stationed in nearby Pensacola, Florida, during his training as a naval aviator, happened to be on liberty and pulled into the parking space beside her. He was immediately captivated by the dark-haired young woman in oversized sunglasses, surrounded by laughing children and melting ice cream cones. Six months later, they were married, beginning a partnership that would span decades, 61 years to be exact.

Like many military families, Bonnie and Bob spent their early married years following the Navy's assignments, living in places from Louisiana to Rhode Island. When their children reached school age, they chose to settle in Summerville, South Carolina, where Bob was born and raised. There, Bonnie put down deep roots in the Lowcountry and built the life she treasured most. Together, she and Bob raised four children-Bobby, Mark, Robin, and Matt-instilling in them the importance of family, loyalty, generosity, and hard work. As her family grew, Bonnie embraced her favorite role of all: "Mimi." She became the proud matriarch of a family that now includes fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immeasurable pride and joy.

Bonnie's home was always open. With Bob's unwavering support, she regularly welcomed her younger siblings during college breaks, summers between semesters, or whenever they simply needed a place to land. Those visits became treasured memories-not only for the Goodwin siblings but also for the impressionable young Bunch children, who eagerly soaked up the music, fashion, humor, and vibrant personalities their aunts and uncles brought with them during the colorful years of the early 1970s.

Beyond her devotion to family, Bonnie was an avid reader, an enthusiastic tennis player, and a lifelong lover of music. Whatever she pursued, she did wholeheartedly, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and warmth to everything she touched. She was a loyal friend, a devoted sister, and a remarkable example to her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her.

Christmas was, without question, Bonnie's favorite time of year. She delighted in transforming her home with beautiful decorations, searching for just the right gifts, and creating the warmth, excitement, and traditions that made the holidays magical for everyone around her. More than the presents or the festivities, it was the joy of having her family together that meant the most to her. Those Christmas memories remain among the greatest gifts she leaves behind.

While she found joy in many things, Bonnie's greatest accomplishment was the life she built with Bob and the family they created together. Nothing made her happier than watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow, celebrating their successes, encouraging them through life's challenges, and loving them unconditionally every step of the way.

Bonnie leaves behind a legacy measured not by accomplishments or accolades, but by the strength of her family, the generosity of her heart, and the countless lives she enriched through her love. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Bonnie was predeceased by her parents Jeanette Goodwin (Nana) and Bob Goodwin, her sister Ann Goodwin and her husband Robert (Bobby) Bunch.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date and time to be determined.
