Arthur Joye Jenkins, Jr.

Arthur Joye Jenkins, Jr., husband of Sarah Ann Hanckel Jenkins, died Monday evening, December 10, 2018, at his home. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Jenkins, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 16, 2018, at the graveside, Trinity Episcopal Churchyard, 1589 Hwy. 174, Edisto Island. The family will receive friends between 4:00 and 7:00 PM Saturday afternoon at the The Regimental Commanders' Riverview Room on The Citadel campus. Directions provided at Main Gate Guardhouse.

Skipper was born in Charleston on July 24, 1933, to the late Elise Cart Jenkins and Arthur Joye Jenkins. He was a graduate of Rivers High School and a 1955 Electrical Engineering graduate of The Citadel having also served as a member of the Summerall Guards. He was commissioned upon graduation as a Lieutenant in the Air Force and then served in the Air Force Reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain.

Having lost his father at only nine months old, he was blessed with two wonderful and loving stepfathers, Colonel Ralph M. Byrd and Charles Neyle Robertson. He spent many happy summers at the family home, Brick House Plantation (Edisto Island) boating, shrimping, fishing, and hunting and later enjoyed sharing the same activities with his own children and grandchildren.

Skipper was a harbor pilot for 35 years, retiring in 1993 and was past president of the Charleston Branch Harbor Pilots Association.

He was a member and past Commodore of Carolina Yacht Club and a member and past Governor of The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of South Carolina. He was also a member of the following: Cathedral Church of St Luke and St Paul, St. Cecelia Society, Society of the Cincinnati of the State of South Carolina, St. Andrew’s Society, St. David’s Society, Agricultural Society of South Carolina, Fort Sumter Camp of The Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Country Club of Charleston.

Skipper is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sarah Ann Hanckel Jenkins; a daughter, Ann Stuart Jenkins of Charleston; a son, Arthur Joye Jenkins III (Cristina) of Charleston; a granddaughter, Sarah Ada R. Douan; a grandson, Arthur Joye Jenkins IV; and step-grandchildren, Justin T. and Alexis P.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Bet” Byrd; nephew, H.L.P.(Laddie) Smith (Sheri); two nieces, Elizabeth B. Brignac (Eric) and Caroline Christman (Alex); five great nephews, Laddie Smith, Whit Smith, Joseph Brignac, Charles Brignac, and Henry Christman; and one great niece, Catherine Christman. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins in both the Jenkins and Hanckel families as well as many on the waterways.

He was predeceased by his sister, Joye Jenkins Chambers; a brother, Rev. Ralph M. Byrd; and two nieces, Joye (Jenks) Jordan and Elise S. Smith.
