Archie Thomas (Tom) Matthews, husband of Amy Guess, passed away peacefully Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Charleston on September 30, 1943, the son of Archie and Joan Matthews. Mr. Matthews attended Charleston County Schools, graduating from St. Andrews High School. He was a veteran, having served 4 years in the U.S. Navy and was retired from the waterfront, after spending 45 years as a stevedore. He was passionate about boating in the Charleston waters and enjoyed entertaining and was a natural host. He had an electric smile and was filled with life and mischief. He was one of a kind. He was raised and lived his entire life in the Charleston area. He is survived by his wife, a son, Michael Matthews (Tammy) of Charleston and a daughter, Sandy Matthews Zapata (Grady) of Jacksonville, Florida, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Barbara Matthews Smith (Bo) and Mary Matthews All (Jimmy), both of Charleston and 3 brothers, Rhinie Matthews of Louisville, KY, Mike Matthews of, Hendersonville, NC, and Mark Matthews of Greenwood, SC, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving parents. His companion and caretaker, Laura Webb, faithfully stood by his side in his final days. I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken, The choosing was not...
