Alvin J. Wall, 86, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 31, 2012. Mr. Wall is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. His interest in academic and career enrichment programs began decades ago, first as a teacher in a small private college, then as an instructor in the Dale Carnegie Organization. Al served and was chairman of the James Island school board for 12 years. His writing has appeared in publications such as Guideposts, Communication Briefings, Bluegrass Unlimited and the News and Courier. He was a proud Navy veteran of World War II and enjoyed reminiscing about the war to anyone who wanted to listen. He was a regular speaker for high school students on Veterans' Day. He is also a retired Vice-president and controller of West End Dairy. A son of William Harvey and Fannie Ruth Wall, Al was born March 19, 1926 in Marion, NC, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. His greatest joy was playing bluegrass music. He played in numerous bands over the past 60 years, including his own band, "Sugar Hill", named after a mountain in NC. Mr. Wall is a 2001 recipient of the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award for the excellence in the traditional area of Bluegrass Music. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen H. Wall, daughters Brenda Roughton (Bob Perkins), Karen Buice (Ricky Buice) and his son Stan Wall, his grandchildren Amber Buice Parish (Jason Parish), Monica Buice Stacy (Tanner Stacy), Brian Roughton, Heather Perkins Moyer and Jesse Perkins, and his great-grandson Austin Reid Turner.
