Alma Lee Laroche

October 6, 2020 — December 6, 2010

Alma Lee Jenkins LaRoche, 90, of Johns Island, the widow of Robert Stanyarne LaRoche, Sr., left to be in the arms of our Lord and Savior on Monday, December 6, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Charleston, October 6, 1920, the daughter of Daniel LaRoche Jenkins and Elizabeth Grimball Jenkins. Mrs. LaRoche received her bachelor's degree from Winthrop College, and was a retired elementary school teacher for the Charleston County School District. She taught at Chicora Elementary, St. John's Elementary and Angel Oak Elementary throughout her career. A lifelong member of St. John's Parish, Alma was a member of the altar guild, the ECW, and a Sunday School teacher for many years. Alma loved the outdoors, whether it be fishing, crabbing or just cooking hamburgers on the grill on a Sunday afternoon for the family. A true care giver, she would always be ready to help. From simply lending a hand to someone in need, to taking a person into her home for long term care, she never wavered in making a decision quickly in what was the best way for her to lend aide. She loved to entertain, her quick wit and easy personality made her a natural hostess. She was raised and lived her entire life on her family's land on Johns Island. She persevered through the great depression, and with her loving husband of 63 years, raised their family on the island, as well. She is survived by her three children, Ann LaRoche King (D. Philip), Robert Stanyarne LaRoche (Mary), and Richard Daniel LaRoche(Robin); her six grandchildren, Laura Jane Vroon(Jon), Philip LaRoche King, Stephen Joseph King(Amanda), Elizabeth Louise King, Daniel Jenkins LaRoche(Deborah) and Lucy Elizabeth LaRoche, as well as three great grandchildren, Hannah Kathryn Vroon, Jonathan Mark Vroon, Jr. and Porter Joseph King. She was predeceased by her grandson, Richard Andrew LaRoche. The relatives and friends of Alma LaRoche are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 1:00 PM, Friday, December 10, 2010 at St. John's Parish Church, 3673 Maybank Hwy. John's Island. The burial will be held in the churchyard. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Thursday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Charleston. Memorial contributions may be made to Respite Care Ministries, 405 King St. Charleston, SC 29403. Arrangements are by the JAMES A. MCALISTER FUNERAL HOME, (843) 766-1365.
