Mr. Alfred Eugene Bevis, 86, a retired Welder with the Charleston Naval Shipyard, veteran of the US Army, and husband of Clydie Eaddy Bevis, entered into eternal rest Friday, November 9, 2018, after a lengthy battle with cancer. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred E. Bevis are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM Tuesday, with a 6:00 PM Rosary, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
Mr. Bevis was born April 14, 1932, son of the late Mary Welch and John Henry Bevis. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Elementary School, Bishop England High School, and graduated from Murray Vocational High School of Charleston. He was a member of the Church of the Nativity, where he was very active. He was dedicated to bringing Communion to the homebound and visiting the sick. Alfred served our country during the Korean War. Upon completion of his military services he worked as a mechanic in private industry and with the Charleston Air Force Base. Later he became a welder at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, retiring in December, 1989 after twenty-eight years of service.
Mr. Bevis is survived by his wife of 54 years; daughter, Kathy B. Harris (David) of Dacula, GA; sons Joel F. Boswell of N. Charleston and Britt L. Boswell of Charleston; he was a loving 'Grandpa' to Robert E. Meyer II (Jennifer), Michael S. Meyer (Rebecca) of Pensacola, FL, Kathryn M. Webb (Timothy), Prior Lake, MN, Joshua L. Boswell (Rebecca) of Jacksonville, FL, Joseph B. Boswell, Charleston, and Holly B. Hearn (Chris) of Hampshire, UK. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Marisa Ann Meyer and Benjamin Avery Meyer of Charleston, and Katelyn Marie Webb and Kelsey Michelle Webb of Prior Lake, MN; two brothers, James Bevis of N. Charleston and Charles Bevis of Easley, SC, and one sister, Mary B. Gormley of Colorado, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and sisters, and his son, Paul Gino Boswell of Liberty, WV.
