Dr. Alan Dixon Horres, husband of Marietta McGinnis Horres, entered into eternal rest on October 11, 2012. Friends and family are invited to attend a Requiem Mass in celebration of his life at Church of the Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Avenue at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 16, 2012 . The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Church of the Holy Communion. Interment will be private at a later date at Magnolia Cemetery. Dr. Horres was born on January 12, 1929 in Charleston, SC, a son of the late John Jacob Horres, Jr. and the late Gertrude Dixon Horres. He was educated in the schools of Charleston, graduating from the High School of Charleston in 1945, after which he received a B.S. degree from the College of Charleston in 1948. Awarded a fellowship to continue his studies at Syracuse University, he obtained a Master of Science degree in 1950. He was then awarded a National Institutes of Health Pre-doctorate Fellowship to study at the Medical University of South Carolina, from which he was awarded his PhD in 1955. A National Institutes of Health Post-doctorate fellowship enabled him to continue his studies at the Medical University until he left to join the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in January of 1958 as Assistant Professor of Physiology and later as Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory in the Department of Thoracic Surgery. In 1965, he returned to the Medical University in the Departments of Physiology and Medicine and Director of the Pulmonary Laboratory at the Veterans Hospital. In 1967, he resigned from the V.A. to concentrate on his duties in the Department of Physiology. He retired in 1997 as Professor Emeritus. During his tenure, he authored and co-authored more than 25 publications of original research. In 1984 he wrote "A History of Physiology at the Medical University of South Carolina" for the 100th anniversary of the American Physiological Society, which was published in the Physiologist. Dr. Horres was a member of the American Physiologic Society, the South Carolina Academy of Science, Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity, the American Rose Society, was a member and past president of the Charleston LowCountry Rose Society and was a consulting rosarian of the American Rose Society. He was a life-long member of the Episcopal Church and a member of the Church of the Holy Communion since age 4. As a teenager he served as President of its Young Peoples Service League and later as advisor to the young people and as Sunday School teacher. He was elected to multiple terms on the Vestry serving the Parish as canvas chairman, treasurer, finance chairman, Senior Warden, Lay Reader, and Lay Chalice Minister. On the Diocesan level, he served on Bishop and Council and a term on the Board of Trustees of Vorhees College. Dr. Horres is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marietta McGinnis Horres, and his children Susan Horres Foreman, Alan Dixon Horres, Jr. (Suzanne), Carolyn Horres Fabian (Fred), and grandchildren Kimberly Rodenberg, Erich Rodenberg (Joanna), Gerald Dixon Horres, Austin Fabian, Amanda Fabian, and great-grandchildren Turner Rodenberg and Charles Rodenberg. He was pre-deceased by his parents and siblings John Jacob Horres III, Walter Burdell Horres, Gertrude Horres Lackey, and Dr. Ernest Glenn Horres.
