Agnes L. Kouten, 80, of Wadmalaw Island, SC passed away on Monday, September 22, 2014 at her home. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Kouten, Jr. are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM Friday, September 26, 2014, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, SC 29455. The Rite of Committal will follow in the Churchyard Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM. Agnes was born on March 18, 1934 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ, to the late Raymond Leavy and the late Marie Sheehan Leavy. She grew up in Matawan, NJ and received her RN from Mercer Hospital in Trenton, NJ. Agnes attended Monmouth College where she received her BS in Biology Health and her BSN. She later attended the University of Pennsylvania where she obtained her MSN. She worked as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in several NJ hospitals. Agnes was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a loving sister and a selfless sponsor to those still suffering. Agnes loved the Rockville group where she was a trusted servant for more than 39 years. She loved her many grandchildren and relished doting on them. Agnes could always be found watching her beloved Mets. She also enjoyed watching golf and college basketball. Agnes was an avid reader and loved to travel with her sisters. She is survived by Joseph W. Kouten, Jr. M.D., her husband of 58 years, and their six children, Joseph W. Kouten, III and his wife, Janet of Simpsonville, SC; Bridget Rosewitz and her husband, Alex of Freehold, NJ; Peter A. Kouten and his wife, Callie of John's Island, SC; Patricia Kouten of Red Bank, NJ; John F. Kouten and his wife, Sara of Hillsborough, NJ; and Kathleen Skelton and her husband, Tim of Colts Neck, NJ, her nine grandchildren, Ashley, Emily, Peter, John, Madeline, Michael, Thomas, Cassidy and Matthew, and five of her twelve siblings Marie, Kathy, Joanne, Margaret, and Eddie.The family request donations to Our Lady of Mercy Outreach PO Box 607 John's Island, SC 29457.
